Renewable Energy Sources: Thumbs-up during International Forum

from:

The development of renewable energy sources is considered to be one of the “miracles” happened in the history of global energy. It is a long time since we became dependent on fossil fuels such as coal and crude oil as a primary source of energy. And yet, the existence of renewable energy resources such as the sunlight, wind, and water are already there even before Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein were born. Fortunately, the advent of these new energy sources is just right on time.

Renewable energy sources, as all we know, make use of different natural resources that are abundantly found in the environment. The sunlight that you are using in drying your washed clothes in the morning can actually give you enough supply of electricity for a lifetime. The wind that carries your kite into the sky can also be used as an energy source. These are just few examples of the renewable energy sources that we are actually using long time before but never thought that it can actually used to produce electricity.

Part of the commitment to further introduce the usage of renewable energy sources is through international forums that can be participated by different individuals, organizations, and governments. These will be deemed helpful in terms of information dissemination about renewable energy sources.

The International Parliamentary Forum which is held at Bonn in Germany on June 2, 2004 highlighted the full and active endorsement of renewable sources of energy as a perfect alternative to the rising cost of fossil fuels being imported by different countries. A total of 310 parliamentarians from 67 countries participated in the said international forum. They have drafted and unanimously approved a resolution on renewable energy. The resolution is stated as follows:

1. Every individual living in this world is entitled to a secure and adequate energy supply. That is why respective governments must ensure that they are provided with enough energy supply by undertaking steps in developing existing sources and searching for new ones.

2. Fossil fuels are used primarily to supply global energy needs. However, due to the depletion of conventional fossil fuel reserves around the world, it is deemed that extensive researches must be done in order to arrive in more abundant and more efficient energy sources.

3. Combustion of fossil fuels is now showing negative impacts in our environment, particularly in the climatic conditions. It also results to serious social and economic consequences in addition to the associated risk to human health.

4. Development of nuclear energy must be stopped prior on extensive research with regards to proper disposing of nuclear wastes. In addition, it poses great risk of nuclear accidents and the possibility of using it as a destruction weapon.

5. In view of these problems, it is deemed necessary to develop and enhance renewable energy sources (in the form of hydropower, solar radiation system, wind power, biomass, bio-fuels, marine energies, and geothermal power) which are believed to satisfy global energy needs in the long term.

6. In addition to the aforementioned benefit, development of renewable energy sources can actually open opportunities for decentralized energy application, which can guarantee economic and environmental development.

7. Massive usage of renewable energy can reduce the operating costs thus providing much cheaper electricity cost. Subsequently, it can also open for career opportunities in the renewable energy field.

8. And for these reasons, we, the participants of this international forum, unanimously approved the use of renewable energy source as a viable alternative to fossil fuels.

The aforementioned resolution clearly delivers one message. We must act now and develop renewable energy sources to sustain our long-term energy needs.
